Poem 261: Redemption

There is a comedian and “Tony Hinchcliffe” is his name

He was the entertainment hired for “Donald Trump’s” campaign

He started the evening off with so many crude and racists jokes

There are so many thousands of voters that he provoked

They were aimed at the demographic that “Trump” was trying to persuade

Needless to say these potential voters felt they were betrayed!

What loyalties they had to “Trump” went up in smoke

Of course the “Republicans” maintain that it was only a joke

“Donald” claims he had no idea of who this man was

Just lying through his teeth as he often does

“Trump” now talks about the size of “Arnold Palmer’s” penis and “Hannibal Lecter”

After taking away women’s rights to abortions he says he’s their “protector”

I’m sure to all these women it must mean a lot?

“Donald” insists on this whether they like it or not

He still has his “MAGA” disciples behind him through thick and thin

This election is a tossup and he could still win

The polls show him and “Kamala” neck and neck in this fight

We may not even get the final results on Tuesday night

So this scenario is going to play out like it did before

Not that we requested it, but were in for an encore

He has been going so long with all his lies and deceptions

His followers still believe all these misconceptions

You see he has never lost and is still the “President” in their eyes

To the “Republican” party, he is still their guy!

Not sure how this will all go down if “Harris” comes out on top?

One has to wonder if this “stupidity” will ever stop?

I’m hoping “Kamala” wins and Trump finally goes to trial

Just let him and his cronies continue to stay in “denial”

“Donny” is in trouble you can see him starting to squirm

“Trump” will become an inmate if he doesn’t get a second term

It would be nice to see him and his enablers finally pay

Just back up the paddy wagon and take them all away

Poem 260: Old Vinyl

I have been going through my records and enjoying the tunes

Listening to these oldies throughout the afternoon

It’s hard to believe that these records still sound so great

Considering they have been stored for decades in old milk crates

Somehow the crackle in some of the songs doesn’t spoil the sound

When you stop to consider how long these albums have been around

I had to buy new brushes so I could wipe these records clean

This was a ritual I learned before I became a “teen”

Some clean them right out of the case before they begin

I prefer to put it on the turntable and wipe it while it spins

I’m not sure what the proper method is to get this chore done

This was a process that used to be performed by everyone

Then you had the phonographs that could play five or six albums in a stack

They would play one after another so you could listen and just sit back

I don’t know if you can still buy them, not sure if they are in demand?

Seems they were phased out over the years and I don’t understand

Now we have the best of both worlds with “bluetooth” technology on board

You can take your headphones anywhere not having to be attached to a cord

Last year vinyl outsold cd’s, so maybe this isn’t a passing fad

I held on to all my old records and can admit I’m glad

I’ve shopped online and gone to some local record stores

The price that they are asking for albums seems to be so much more

It’s now looking like an investment with what I have in stock

The price they were asking for came to me as quite a shock

So I may comb the second hand stores and take a peek

There are just a few records that I am trying to seek

So if this trend continues, maybe the prices will come down

If not, used records might be hard to find around town

I have enough music to keep me occupied, so many artists to get through

Every song has been a pleasure to listen to

If I never buy a new record, I’m sure I will be fine

I can listen to “Bob Seger”, “Aerosmith” or “April Wine”

Poem 259 “Pay” TV

We used to hear slogans on the radio and television every day

A lot of us remember them because they have stuck with us someway

They used these to promote products of every kind

They have become ear worms that you can’t get out of your mind

Now that we are “series binging” and have the luxury of “on demand”

It must now be harder for companies to be able to endorse their brand

Pop up ads on the internet is a daily ordeal

They are an annoyance and lack any appeal!

If you are watching a live event you may have to sit through a few

But if you record it for later, that’s what you will fast forward through

A “radio jingle” was one of the first advertisements that people would hear

Then they went to television when it made its premiere

“Advertisers” were the backers that paid for what these medias produced

Now with all these “Pay TV” services, their audiences are being reduced

Gone are the days when all you needed was an aerial for you tv set

If you attached one to today’s electronics, I don’t know what you’d get?

Maybe in a big city you might get a signal or two

It probably wouldn’t be worth the aggravation that you would go through

Now we are spoiled and want tv “on demand”

Take a hold of the remote and be in command

Don’t have to be sitting in front of the set when it first comes on the air

We have the luxury of watching it later, we don’t really care

This is now our new lifestyle, that’s just how it goes

There is a cost for this convenience and we all pay through the nose!

“Netflix”, “Disney”, “Prime Video”, or “Crave” are other options you may choose

So many alternatives out there left for you to peruse

Of course you can’t have anything without your “internet”

Then we are left to wonder how come we are so far in debt?

This is our new “culture” the die has been cast

There is no way that networks like “NBC”, “ABC”, “CBS” etc. can last!

You may laugh about the old days because there wasn’t that much television to see!

I think the joke is now on all of us, because we used to get all of it for free!

Poem 258: Thanksgiving Meal

Ham, turkey or both are usually your Thanksgiving meal

This year I have found that these choices are losing some appeal

People are opting for chicken instead of that other big bird

Still some have chosen to order pizza, a rumour that I heard

These are traditions, does it really matter what’s on your plate?

For me this is not an issue, for others it could be a major debate!

The plan I had was dinner on Sunday which was the case

My daughter and son in law were cooking and bringing it to my place

I got up Saturday morning and as usual was walking along the way

When I got a message that the meal was happening on this day

So when I got home, I had to kick it into another gear

I had to get my premises cleaned before they arrived here

It took a couple of hours but I got it “spic and span”

Not up to some people’s high standards but I do the best I can

Then I finally got to eat which was now close to noon

I still had to shower and I wanted to do that soon

So after all that work, the place and I were looking pretty fine

Then I got another call from my daughter of mine

So after all that sweeping, vacuuming, hell I even made my bed!

She asked if it would be too much trouble to eat at her house instead?

She insisted on me bringing the pooch so he wouldn’t be alone

We both agreed it was the easiest for everyone and then both hung up the phone

My granddaughter from Toronto chose her favourite dinner

Her mother honoured her wishes and the meal was a winner!

Buffalo chicken potato casserole was enjoyed by everyone

Followed by homemade blueberry pie made by my son in law and our meal was done

The meal was perfect and the company was great

Needless to say we finished everything that was on our plate

My daughter and granddaughter packed a meal for a friend of theirs to eat

I walked down the street with them and my evening was complete

Dinner with family, who could ask for more

On holidays like these, that is what I am “thankful” for

Poem 257: Fall Cleanup

Haven’t spent all that much time on my front porch this past week

It seems the temperature outside hasn’t reached its peak

I did enjoy a few brief minutes here and there

The opportunities unfortunately are becoming rare

It’s October now and still the weather has been great

Especially at this time of year when it seems to fluctuate

I have some “Halloween” decorations to be put on display

This could also be the time when I put the outdoor furniture away

I have to rearrange the front porch if I am to find some space

Instead of going through all that trouble why not put them in their storage place

Even though the days have been nice, they aren’t going to get much better

It’s not the same sitting out there, if you are forced to wear a sweater

You want to be out there when the sun is bright

Knowing it is setting earlier with every passing night

The long days of summer have unfortunately come to an end

The weather is getting cooler, that’s just reality my friend

There is so much to do before the end of fall

I  guess I have to get selfish and take advantage of it all

It seems silly to wait for warm weather that may never appear

You can’t count on it because we are so close to the end of the year

The cold days are going to outnumber the warm ones which is sad but true

So taken in that context, “you gotta do what you gotta do!

It’s time to get into gear and start putting things away

Be careful when you store them, because you’re going to need them next May

My oak and maple trees still have lots of leaves to shed

I guess while I am waiting I could clean out the garden beds

Between the gardens and the leaves I will accumulate a great big pile

The process of disposing  them could take quite a while

Maybe I should head out right now and enjoy the sun

Who knows how long this will take before I get all of this done

I won’t get it finished today but I could put in a major dent

This way I can say I accomplished something in any event

Try to enjoy it and take it all in stride

Hoping we have more weeks before we’re stuck inside

The task that I will regret more than any other

Is when I have to apply the “air conditioner” cover

Poem 256: Pack It To The Max

My wife has been planning her trip for many weeks we know

This Sunday was the morning that she had chosen to go

Her itinerary was now set in stone

She intended to make this trip all alone

There are people to visit on her way

This adventure was scheduled to start today

All the time and effort was wisely spent

Just to get ready for this latest event

Throughout all this time, all her necessities were put in place

Slowly over time, taking up all of our living space

Things were put here and there

They could be found almost anywhere

The living room couch was reduced to just one seat

Once this was done, her stockpile was complete

This was the night before her eight hour trip, which is pretty far

The major challenge that laid before us, was how to pack it in her car

This shouldn’t be a problem because here SUV has lots of space

However the first thing was a mattress that we had to put in place

We put stuff underneath it which raised it up some more

We had to abandon that idea because we couldn’t shut the door

There is a special skill my wife has of rearranging things to fit

Did she get all her supplies packed? Yes, every single bit

Hats off to her because it really was quite a feat

Good thing it was a solo trip, because she also filled up the passenger seat!

Everything she needed could be accessed by either back door

Hopefully she has enough room left when she buys stuff at the “IKEA” store!

I hope she enjoys her trip and doesn’t encounter too much frustration

The plan is not to open the hatchback until she reaches her final destination

Once she reaches “Quebec” there she will be able to stay

She’ll spend some weeks with her daughter’s family and watch the grandchildren play

Then when it’s time to go, she can leave without a care

She will have no problem packing, because the mattress is staying there!

Poem 255: Sitcom Quiz

“Lucy”, “Ricky”, “Ethel” and “Fred”

“Ralph”, “Alice”, “Trixie” and “Ed”

“Ward”, “June”, “Wally” and “Beaver”

The “Ricardo’s”, “Mertz’s”, “Kramden’s”, “Norton’s” and “Cleaver’s”

These are characters in “50s” sitcoms that paved the way

They set the pattern for the shows that we watch today

So with each decade there are shows that have  stood the test of time

The trick is to mention some of them and still make it rhyme

I am going to go through each decade and some names you should know

The trick is to try and see if you remember the show

“Rob”, “Laura”, “Sally” and “Buddy” start the “60s” scene

Then there is “Jed”, “Elly May”, “Granny” and “Jethro Bodine”

“The Skipper”, “Gilligan”, “The Professor”, “Ginger” and “Mary Ann”

Can you guess all these shows?  I think you can!

“Archie” and “Edith”, “Gloria” and “Mike”

“Trapper John”, “Hawkeye”, “Hot Lips” and “Radar” are others you might like

“Mary”, “Lou”, “Murray”, “Rhoda” and “Ted”

Those were your “70s” shows, enough said!

“Sam”, “Diane”, “Rebecca”, “Carla”, “Frasier”, “Woody” and “Norm”, so many in this cast

“Dorothy” , “Rose”, “Sophia” and “Blanche” is another popular show from the past

Round off with “Alex”, “Mallory”, “Jennifer”, “Steven” and “Elyse” who make up the “Keaton” crew

Those are all the characters and now the “80s” are through!

“Jennifer”, “Monica”, “Phoebe”, “Joey”, “Chandler” and “Ross”

There could have been a few episodes that you might have come across

“Phillip”, “Carlton”, “Ashley”, “Hillary” and of course “Will”

This is a series that is popular still!

“Jerry”, “Elaine”, “Cosmo” and “George” make up our final cast

These represent some shows of the nineties and that is our last

This brings us to the end of the “20th Century” and I am going to finish there

This covers fifty years of television in case you’re not aware

I’m not doing the next two decades and I hope you understand

If you get nostalgic after reading this, these shows are all “on demand”

Poem 254: Presidential Debate

The biggest news of the week has to be the “Presidential” debate

“Harris” nailed it from the start but “Trump” didn’t do all that great

“Kamala” shook “Donald’s” hand after having to walk right across the floor

This was just the beginning, “Trump” wasn’t prepared for what was in store

She made a point of pronouncing her name to him as she made her introduction

This was just the first example of “Trump” starting to malfunction

This would be the only time he would look at her face to face

After ninety minutes of questions he was put in his place

She knew what she was doing and luring him was the trick

He took the bait every time and came out looking like a lunatic

He lied throughout his performance and was fact checked which was a first

This was something that he wasn’t expecting and he went from bad to worst

“Kamala Harris” had a chuckle with the outbursts he displayed

Especially with this wild accusation that he made

He claimed that “Haitian” immigrants were eating cats and dogs for food

This marked the point where he officially became unglued

The moderators told him it wasn’t true and of course he didn’t agree

He went into a meltdown by saying he saw it on TV

A little later each candidate said their final words and it was officially done

All the major networks said that “Kamala Harris” clearly had won

Later on that evening “Trump” was seen claiming he came out on top

The lying and the stupidity he spiels just never seems to stop

Meanwhile in “Springfield Ohio” where these “Haitian” immigrants can be found

“Republicans” continue with the claim that they are eating their cats and hounds

Bomb threats have been called in causing two schools to close

I guess when you are trying to win an election that’s just how it goes

The sad thing is that this may not sway the diehard “Trump” supporters away

In their loyalty to their cult leader, this is just another day

Over sixty seven million people tuned in  to watch this debate

Will there be another one? We are forced to have to sit and wait

“Americans” have only seven weeks to make their selection

Even after all of these escapades “Trump” could still win this election

Poem 253: Fall Colours

I took the time to look around my neighbourhood and was shocked at what I’d seen

As I glanced upon the treetops, they weren’t that solid shade of green

They were tinged a bit with the colours of yellow and red

What was just a few leaves last week, was now beginning to  spread

Saturday has arrived and it isn’t warm at all

I guess there is no denying it, we are only weeks away from fall

The temperature tonight is supposed to drop below the freezing mark

Tomorrow we will pick up the pace when walking through the park

I am not going to  panic, it’s just a sample of what’s in store

This is to last the weekend and then the warmth returns once more

All the signs are there, the NFL has just begun

The baseball fans are hyped up for their teams to make the playoff run

The networks are advertising their new lineups and shows coming our way

They bombard us with their commercials each and every day

Setting us up for the seasons where we spend more time inside

Mother Nature will become unpredictable, a fact that can’t be denied!

Take advantage of the nice days that are left because there is a limited supply

We are only days away from kissing summer goodbye

Get out and enjoy the colours of fall that will be on full display

Take in all the sunshine each and every day

There should be lots of great weather ahead for all of us to savour

Go out and partake in it, do yourself a favour

There is so much beauty out there for us to share

There is still plenty of time before the trees are bare

The landscape’s pastels will vary from week to week

There will be experts advising us when these colours reach their peak

Each time a stiff breeze comes in, more leaves fall to the ground

Who knows how much longer we will hear that rustling sound!

The participants in this annual event get reduced with every gust

Getting out to enjoy this scenery certainly is a must

I intend to make a point of enjoying this spectacular show

This is the final production before we are trudging through the snow

Poem 252: Busy Saturday

My Saturday morning started early, around six o’clock

Then shortly afterwards, the dog and I were on our walk

It was a nice morning and we didn’t set much of a pace

After over an hour and a half of walking, we were back at our place

Both of us were contented in achieving our daily goal

Once we entered the house, I filled his water bowl

He lapped it up mightily and finally quenched his thirst

Meanwhile I polished off a glass myself and was able to finish first

I filled up his food dish and he ate a little bit

Then we headed to the front porch to relax and sit

I wolfed down some cereal as I listened to the news

The puppy did his usual, stretched out and took a snooze

After relaxing for a while, I heard my cell phone beep

It wasn’t quite loud enough to rouse my dog from sleep

My neighbours were wondering if I wanted to join them in a hike

I messaged back that I would and proceeded to get my bike

It was a little after nine when the three of us headed out

We all knew where we were going and were familiar with the route

It would be almost four hours after everything was said and done

We arrived back in our neighbourhood  a little after one

We covered over thirty four kilometers on the trek that we took

We took in all the scenery and had the time to stop and look

I finished cleaning myself up and was just sitting around

When all of a sudden, my phone made another beeping sound

It was my daughter asking me if I wanted to see the bands playing on Main Street

I was all for it and decided walking down to her house was the best place to meet

It would be just before five when we reached the “downtown” core

We walked between “Oak” and “Main” right up to the final encore

We ate some pizza and ice cream and ran into cousins we haven’t seen in years

The highlight of the evening was when the band “Dwayne Gretzky” finally appeared

They were a remarkable cover band and all their musicians were great

All the songs they played were classics and they were well worth the wait

Everyone there seemed to be enjoying the show

After playing their final song, it was now time to  go

Once we got back to my daughter’s place, her fiancé came up with a plan

They insisted that they wanted to protect this “old man”

The two of them escorted me right up to my front door

After standing and walking for six hours who could ask for more!

I told them to make sure when they got home to give me a call

So to add up to that cycling, I finished with over 27,000 steps in all
