Poem 95: In Your Neighbourhood

It’s the winter solstice, which makes it official today

It’s the first day of this season and it’s not going away

Today we also have our longest night

Tomorrow we increase the time of daylight

We got through November with no snow on the ground

Now in our region there is snow everywhere to be found

It’s freezing rain right now which is a sort of reprieve

There’s fifteen centimeters expected on Christmas eve

The day before Christmas, Ford is going to shut things down

The length of the closure will be two weeks in our town

Those who live south of our northern border

Will get an extra fortnight to put things in order

The more the merrier in this case doesn’t necessarily apply

The higher the concentration, the more people will die

The Premier knows exactly what is at stake

There’s talk of them extending the Christmas break

He’s trying to prevent another wave before it can begin

A gamble he is taking and has all his chips in

This lock down will contnue into the new year

Most of us will follow while others refuse to adhere

This holiday season will be one for the ages

Hopefully this pandemic is into its final stages

This Christmas season I am willing to bet

Will be the one that no one will ever forget

With all this snow at least on our block

It gives our neighbours all a chance to talk

When we are digging each of ourselves out

That’s the only time where we are out and about

The weather is usually mild when we receive a big pile

So since we are all out, that’s when we can talk for awhile

Last night we were out for hours in our driveway

Talking to each other, we all had something to say

Satisfied that we all got rid of the snow

The plow then goes by and we all have to go

Instead of getting angry, we all took it in stride

I guess we were all tired of being cooped up inside

Even after all that, my wife decided to play in the snow

She was constructing her snowman and what do you know?

Just when she had the body made and in its place

A neighbour offered her a carrot to use for the face

Another neighbour was dropping off baked goods door to door

Such a variety of sweet goods, you couldn’t ask for more

We may not have a big family gathering this yuletide season

We’ve heard it for months, we all know the reason

It’s time to stick to this plan and get rid of this curse

Don’t buck the system, it only makes everything worse

In our location where we choose to live

We are surrounded by people who love to give

They are all there when you are in need

Or lend you the tools to help you succeed

So if we get all that snow before the big day

It will be another visit that we get to pay

This way we can give best wishes to one another

Like you would if it was your sister or brother

We have become an extended family in so many ways

We still salute all of our essential workers each and every day

The more the flakes fall, the better we all get to know

So in order to keep in touch, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
