Poem 90: Essential Workers

We are now in the middle of November and winter is now in sight

The season that all health officials promise will not be all that bright

They are describing it as dark and bleak, that we all will have to endure

Even though they are optimistic that they may soon have a vaccine cure

The pandemic continues, the cases of covid-19 are rising across every land

It’s up to us, it’s time to heed the message and take a global stand

We owe this to all our front line workers who are exhausted from this fight

We are only requested to do our due diligence and just do what is right

There is more than the people who are delivering the mail

There is just so much more that this does entail

Think of all the restaurants that are hanging by a thread

Why not help and order takeout from them instead?

All people in retail that stock the shelves and meet you face to face

Take some time to consider them and put yourself in their place

Would you be able to cope with the thought that you could be exposed?

What if your whole livelihood’s future is on the edge of being foreclosed?

There are so many people that are living on the brink

It’s time for all of us to be more caring and kind, to stop and think

Remember all the people who run your corner store

The ones who work in the delivery service, there’s so many more

People that are trying to keep everything thriving

Trying their best to keep their own businesses surviving

Not to mention all the doctors and nurses and hospital workers as a whole

The ones whose positions are most perilous, God bless their souls

These individuals have been fighting in the trenches for months without a break

Dealing with this pandemic as well as putting all their lives at stake

You see, their numbers have also diminished and have many casualties as well

We enjoyed our summer and autumn while they endure this living hell

I know that we were honouring them each evening by banging on our pots

These unselfish workers have never gotten a break, still giving all they’ve got

I know we think of them as heroes but they are human after all

It’s time for us to pay homage to them as we prepare for this long haul

We have to do what’s expected of us and try to stay on course

Those of us who choose to stray only end up making things worse

The United States numbers are alarming with daily records being broke

Even with hundreds of thousands of deaths some still treat it as a joke

After all the lies he spewed, it will be Trump that will truly disappear

Unfortunately this joyous occasion doesn’t occur until January next year

Biden has promised to take on the fight when he takes over the helm

Meanwhile with Donald in charge the cases will continue to overwhelm

This silent, spreading virus as foreseen is on another roll

It’s time for us to take the initiative to get it under control

This second coming will be more arduous of a task

All that is required of you is just do what is asked

These essential men and women are drained and mentally fatigued

Only by respecting all their wishes will we have a chance to succeed

It may be many months before this promising vaccine will be released

Thousands will catch it and unfortunately end up being deceased

It will never be enough even with all the accolades we send

The only way to celebrate this group is to bring this virus to an end
