Poem 85: Prevention

You think you have a case of the Monday morning blues?

Guess what was the first thing both of us decided what to do?

Woke up after eight o’clock which for me is somewhat late

My wife and I already made arrangements for this particular date

There was still snow on the ground from the night before

Which somehow seemed so appropriate for what we had in store

This has been a regiment that we have chosen to adhere

It’s a ritual we perform each and every year

The time was actually ten to eleven when we would be seen

This was allotted to us to get our annual flu vaccine

We made our appointments conveniently done online

After having these injections, we both are feeling fine

In our particular demographic, this year, it is all the rage

Something that most of us participate in when we reach a certain age

I am not a golden ager but I admit I am knocking at the door

Because of my particular health issues, I’ve been doing this ten years or more

Over all this time, I heed to my doctor’s instructions and do everything he has said

Who knows what the future has in store for us in the years ahead?

So I am determined to do what’s best for me and stick to this plan

As far as my longevity goes, I will do everything I can

Especially during this pandemic which is powering up once again

You have heard all the procedures, there should be no need to explain

So it only comes as common sense to help prevent the spread

How come so many choose to defy all the solutions instead?

Intent on staying in denial, going on with their lives without any real concern

Disregarding all the experts and ignoring everything that they warn

Choosing not to oblige and simply refusing to wear a mask

Their unwillingness to be receptive to this simple task

Now the experts are telling us we are in the second wave

The more that we cooperate, the more lives we will save

The cases are piling up, the numbers are getting high

Through all this stupidity, so many more will die

I am doing everything I can to stay alive upon this earth

Obviously others don’t value what a life is worth

I am fortunate that I am relatively healthy and actually I feel great

What about our senior folks who are frail and are forced to sit in wait?

Confined indoors hoping they outlast this outbreak

Knowing that their own existence is truly what’s at stake

Enduring this long winter, they will endeavor to stay alive

To receive an inoculation if  they are able to survive

Try to be compassionate and put yourself in their place

Maybe by doing this, the policies you will begin to embrace

We will never eliminate this virus if we can’t collaborate as a whole

It’s time to have some cohesiveness so we can achieve this final goal
