Poem 78: School Starts

It is now Labour Day and school starts tomorrow

Will it be a day of triumph or will it be a day of sorrow?

Parents are conflicted on what to do or say

Send them to their classes or learn online and stay?

Not a situation that all of us have to choose

If everything goes alright, no one will have to lose

So many kids affected and no real plan in sight

Guidelines are certainly out there but will they do it right?

Social spacing to be enforced and masks to be worn by most

Each region has their own rules and vary from coast to coast

Let’s face it, it’s an experiment in process all the way

If things don’t turn out, some people will have to pay

Students along with their teachers are literally putting their lives on the line

Most people seem optimistic since the cases are now on the decline

I can’t see how they will keep all these rules in effect

Children keeping their social distance is a lot for anyone to expect

How are you going to control their movements once their class is let out?

How are they going to stop the elementary students from running all about?

Teachers are asking for smaller classes to ease the lack of space

Premiers in most Provinces are reluctant to put this rule in place

Ford in Ontario is having trouble and has told his educators “to get in line”

It didn’t come out as an order, it sounded more like a whine

He then started to plead with them and try to make their union look wrong

He brought up all the essential workers’ contributions and wanted them to go along

Keep in mind, how volatile contract talks went with Premier Ford

But there he is trying to shame them and telling them to get on board

It’s no time  to try and flex his muscles or antagonize them one little bit

If he doesn’t watch himself, he could find himself in some more deep shit

These instructors are now putting themselves in the line of fire

A predicament that no one in their right mind would desire

They have to take command of this plight and try to rein it in

With no real strategy and not knowing where to begin

It only makes sense that they should be stressed out with this endeavor

The challenge is to keep everyone from harm with no plan whatsoever

Each human that goes through those doors is rolling the dice each and everyday

So the leader of this Province should be alert to what they have to say

You can sit in your office and stay there safe and sound

Meanwhile in a crowded classroom with their students is where the teachers can be found

One germ flourishes and a hot spot could appear

Then it will be time for the Premier to get things into gear

So don’t be berating these professionals and play your stupid game

Because if one case of Covid 19 erupts, the people of the Province will have you to blame
